Earthworm
Earthworm
Earthworm (born James McEvoy) is an independent hiphop artist from Ogden, Ut. He began playing shows for his friends at a small local venue, rehearsing spoken word over various instrumentals played from a laptop. In this time he released his first EP, titled ‘zugzwang.’ The lyrics focused on growing up in a religious state, making ends meet, and finding his voice. The EP was recorded by close friend Clësh (Brandon Willobee) and produced by Earthworm.
Soon after, Earthworm and Clësh teamed up to produce his first first full length album. Boasting 15 tracks, all produced by Clësh, Welcome Home was released in 2016. 1,000 hard copies were sold. With over 5,000 words in the album, it was obvious this was a definitive push towards the abstract, darker side of the genre. The album was well received, and featured Early Adopted, an alternative hiphop artist from Boston.
A year later, Earthworm dropped another full length album, aptly titled ‘Flowers’. Flowers was a far cry from Welcome Home, in terms of lyrics, style and sound. The album showcased a different Earthworm, focusing on hooks instead of verses, and artistry instead of poetry. Most of the production coming from Clësh, it still held the attitude and versatility of the first album, while encasing a more positive side the two had not yet explored. Featuring local artists such as Vinnie Cassius, Zen Garden, and Pharoe, it was apparent this album was meant to give back to the city that raised him. His city responded, selling out of the album completely.
Earthworm and Clësh dropped their latest single, Lost The Plot, in the summer of 2017. The song featured a verse from rising artist KOTA the Friend, as well as a hook from Mick Jenkins, both of whom have been personal inspirations to Earthworm.
Since then, the two have been quietly working, and hope to release new music in 2018.
